The supersaw was first debuted in 1996 by Roland with their JP-8000 and JP-8080 analog synthesizer product line. The single-oscillator synth configuration emulates what is described as "the presence of seven sawtooths detuned against each other" by modulating its detuning features.
Sawtooths were widespread in electronic dance music, especially in music circles that produced hardcore, hardstyle, and anthem trance. The full body nature of the sawtooth makes it applicable both as a bass and as a lead synth in a wide variety of mixdowns.
Recreations[]
The supersaw is one of the most reproducable synthesizers in the industry. In softsynths, the typical design is loosely templated on detuning multiple sawtooth synths and simply layering them together. Most of the work involves choosing an instrument with preferable effects layering to enhance this basic form of the sound.
